Achievers and Survivors
is authors’ tribute to the transgender community who have suffered immense indignities and discrimination in India starting from the decline of Mughal Empire when the British Raj imposed the 16th century anti-buggery law upon them. They were criminalized and prevented from following their traditional profession, wearing female attire or performing in public and reduced to penury and ignominy.
This situation continued in free India till 2014, when the Supreme Court passed its momentous judgement. Amma Model of Development in Tamil Nadu: Growth, Well-being, Welfare and Exemplary Governance is written by Dr. C. K. Gariyali, IAS (Retd.), and Dr. S. K. Vettivel, DPhil (IDS Sussex). It sets out the approach to development pursued by Dr. J. Jayalalithaa across her terms as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, in 1991 to 1996, 2001 to 2006, and from 2011, and puts it forward as a model with application beyond the state.
The book rests on a single proposition: that development cannot be reduced to growth alone, but is the sum of growth, well-being, welfare and good governance, and that no one of the four is sufficient without the others. Working from this definition, the authors take the schemes and projects introduced during those years in office and arrange them under the four headings, which give the volume its structure between a prologue and an epilogue.
Written by two authors with long experience of administration in Tamil Nadu, the book reads the result of the 2014 general election in the state, where the AIADMK took 37 of 39 parliamentary seats, as public endorsement of that model, and asks through it the question that stands behind any programme of government: what is it that people actually want?

Pillars of Hope is the second of three volumes in which Dr. Chander Kanta Gariyali and Dr. S. K. Vettivel set down the experience of the women's self-help movement in Tamil Nadu. Published in 2006, it follows Women's Own and precedes Climbing Higher, and it turns from the shape of the programme to the women who carried it.
The book gathers the working life of the groups: how they were formed and held together, how savings and credit were managed month after month, what the members made of the training given to them, and how the habit of meeting and deciding together changed what these women expected of themselves and of the institutions around them.
The title carries the argument of the book. The movement did not rest on policy alone. It rested on the women who kept the accounts, chaired the meetings and stood surety for one another, and it is to them that Pillars of Hope gives its pages.

Climbing Higher is the third of three volumes in which Dr. Chander Kanta Gariyali sets down the experience of the women's self-help movement in Tamil Nadu. Published by Vetri Publishers in 2007, after Women's Own and Pillars of Hope, it takes up the question that follows from the growth of the movement: what happens when individual groups come together into federations at the panchayat level. The book examines how these federations were formed, governed and financed, and what village women could achieve together that no single group could achieve alone. A federation could raise larger credit, meet banks and officials with real weight behind it, run its own training and monitoring, and speak for its members in the affairs of the panchayat. Where the earlier volumes were about savings, self-reliance and the women who carried the movement, Climbing Higheris about scale and institutional strength. It records the point at which women's groups ceased to be the beneficiaries of a programme and became organisations in their own right.

Women's Own is written by Dr. Chander Kanta Gariyali, the senior Tamil Nadu IAS officer known as the Mother of Self-Help Groups in the state and former Chairman and Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women. It tells the story of the movement she helped create, from the first village savings circles of the late 1980s to one of the largest grassroots networks of its kind in India, reaching millions of households.
The book shows how thrift and credit opened the way to enterprise, literacy, mobility and a voice in village affairs, and how government, banks and voluntary organisations were brought together to carry the model into every district.

Shakti Durga, A disciple of Sri Sakthi Amma
Dr. Chander Kanta Gariyali, a retired Civil Servant of Tamil Nadu Government, was born in 1948 into a highly spiritual Kashmiri Pundit family. She first met Sri Narayani Amma in 1996. Since then she has enjoyed enormous blessings and immense affection of Amma. One of the oldest devotees of Sripuram, she has seen it growing out of a humble thatched shrine and an ‘anthill’ into the magnificent Golden Temple that it is today. In 2014, due to the grace of Sri Narayani Amma, Dr. Gariyali came in contact with Shakti Durga, a disciple of Amma, engaged in spiritual work in Cooranbong near Newcastle in Australia.
From the very first meeting Dr. Gariyali was fascinated by the personality of Shakti Durga. It was most baffling to her that a Western woman, a leading barrister, from a staunch Catholic background, with modern university education, should get transformed into an Indian style Guru. In order to understand her she attended many retreats with Shakti Durga.
